Celebrating the International Year of Indigenous Languages 2019

This year, in honour of International Year of Indigenous Languages, we’re very excited to announce that we’re partnering with the Polyglot Conference to promote indigenous and minority languages and cultures.

This year, the Polyglot Conference is taking place in Fukuoka, Japan. As most of you will know, Ainu was recently finally officially recognised by the Japanese Government as a minority culture.

In light of all this, we decided to run a competition where entrants can win our beloved online Ainu course (the first ever online Ainu course of its kind in the English language). You can read more about the course here.

But that’s not all! For the month of November, Richard Simcott who runs the Polyglot conference and who was recently featured on the BBC series "The Superlinguists” will be learning Ainu with you and joining you on your journey, where you all be able to monitor each other’s progress each week through a Google Hangouts group.

How do I take part in this amazing competition?

To take part in this competition, all we ask of you is to submit a short 1 minute video explaining why you think it is important to protect indigenous and minority languages and cultures. Please use the hashtag #tribalingual #PolyglotConf19 #IYIL2019 when submitting your video.

The competition opens on the 15 August and closes on the 15th September.

Winners will be announced on stage at the Polyglot Conference in Fukuoka, Japan on the 19th October.

Good luck!
